Portal tomb in An Cloigeann

Portal tomb

What is recorded here

An Cloigeann holds a portal tomb where huge stones lean together like a mouth waiting to swallow a name. It has stood in County Mayo since before written memory, likely guiding the dead into darkness while the living watched rain strip the grass above. The structure is not a ruin but a completed act of human will, shaping weight and shadow into a chamber for what flesh cannot keep.

Portal tomb, dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000–2500 BCE). These tombs are significant as early examples of communal burial and megalithic construction in Ireland.
