Pontefract Castle was the last royalist stronghold to fall during the English Civil War, holding out through three sieges before Oliver Cromwell’s forces broke through in 1649. Inside its stone chambers, kings and earls bled, starved or waited for axes, while prisoners scratched their names into dungeon walls to prove they had lived. Woodland now swallows the ruins, hiding the scale of a place that once controlled northern England and swallowed royal fate whole.
