What is recorded here
No castle ever rose at Pitcaple. The policies still show rigid furrows cut through Aberdeenshire soil, marking medieval fields that continued long after kings and border wars faded. The castle may have been a room, a claim, or a mistake repeated until it sounded like stone. What is certain is the land: shaped, measured, and still visible beneath grass.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Pitcaple Castle Policies as Rig and Furrow (medieval) - (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Pitcaple Castle Policies are associated with the medieval and post-medieval estate of Pitcaple Castle, which was held by the Keith family, Earls Marischal of Scotland, from the 14th century onwards. The site is important as an example of medieval agricultural land management and the historical influence of one of Scotland's most powerful noble families.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
