Pit in Portan (dunboyne By.)

Archaeological monitoring (15E0577) by P. Duffy, D. Bayle and J. Whitaker of topsoil stripping over a large area (c. 92 ha.) conducted intermittently between Dec. 2015 and October 2018 uncovered 37 locations of potential archaeological importance (excavations.ie 2016:051). Each of these was further investigated by the same archaeologists under different licences. At Site 3, excavation (16E0064) by P. Duffy recorded (excavations. ie 2016:557) an isolated pit (dims 2.5m x 1m; D 0.42m) that was cut by an open field gully (Wth 1.2m). Its basal fill of brown/grey clay with charcoal was beneath a grey/brown clay with charcoal. There was no evidence of burning in situ and it is thought to represent hearth waste.
