Pierce O'Leary was born in Dublin on 5 November 1959, the same city that later gave David O'Leary to Arsenal. Pierce became a tall centre-half for Shamrock Rovers, Vancouver Whitecaps and Celtic, winning the FAI Cup and a Scottish League Championship before pelvic trouble ended his playing career in 1988. His son Ryan also became a professional footballer, continuing the family’s connection to the game.
