Philip Grierson

Grierson was born in Dublin in 1910, the son of a surveyor who lost his post and turned a Clondalkin farm into a ledger of sharp decisions. That household bred a mind for measurement, later directed not toward land but toward the weight, alloy and dates hidden inside medieval coins. He carried Dublin’s practical clarity into Cambridge, where patience and precision turned small discs into a map of Europe’s forgotten centuries.
