Penal Mass station in Laghile (abington Par.)

The SE face of quarried rock has a sunken cross carved into it, indicating that this rock was used as a place to say mass during penal times. There is a small concrete platform in front of the rock face measuring 4m from E-W by 2m N-S which was built in recent times. This rock face is located on the SE facing slope of rising ground in an upland river valley with good extensive views of the valley to the E and S. This site is associated with the practice of clandestine Catholic Masses during the Penal Times in Ireland, when Catholic worship was suppressed. The sunken cross and small platform suggest a hidden place of religious assembly and devotion.
