One chamber of the Dublin birthplace still smells of wet stone and wood smoke. Durcan stood in that chamber at eight years old, watching rain strike the window like a tiny drum. He remembered the sound long after he forgot the year, and it is that child's ear, not the poet's fame, which the house must keep alive.
