Partial remains of Bristol Castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Norman builders raised Bristol Castle shortly after the Conquest, creating one of the west's strongest medieval strongholds. Centuries of change stripped much of that structure, leaving behind stone fragments that still reveal the shape of its defensive purpose. The surviving work witnesses Bristol's role as a centre of power and commerce, even when the greater castle has faded from memory.
The National Heritage List for England records Partial remains of Bristol Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Bristol Castle was built in the 11th century by the de Bohun family, and later held by various Norman lords and the Crown. It is remembered for its historical role in the governance of the region and its partial remains, which provide insight into medieval castle architecture and Bristol's early history.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
