Pallas Castle is a five-storey Burke tower house built around 1500 in County Galway, still standing inside a rare complete bawn with corner turrets and a two-storey gatehouse. Its thick walls hide a winding stair, vaulted chamber and good fireplaces, while a thatched roof survived into the early 1900s. The Burkes built it, the Nugents took it after the Restoration, and Burke descendants may still live down the road, keeping the name warm in ordinary Galway life.
