Oxwich Castle is a Tudor fortified manor on a wooded Gower headland, built by the Mansell family across the sixteenth century after earlier military tenants occupied the site. Sir Edward Mansel expanded it into a grand Elizabethan house, possibly driving himself to bankruptcy, while a ruined tower and scattered stones hint at the older de Penres stronghold beneath. The castle fell into farm use, survived a demolition threat in 1949, and now stands under Cadw care with a gold brooch hidden in its walls waiting to be remembered.
