Overton Cotton Mill (Disused)

Substantial remains of early 19th century cotton mill, built by George Allman on Bridewell River, c. 1km S of Oldchapel. Partially collapsed 14-bay, 5-storey structure long axis NE-SW. Deep wheel pit (Wth 1.93m) along SW gable; cast iron axle and flaunch in situ. Mill race carried to wheel pit on 3-arched aquaduct. At SW end are ruins 10-bay, 5-storey addition built in 1839 (Ó Donnchadha 1985, 4-7). Mill complex enclosed by high stone wall. Remains of Overton House (CO110-049--) visible on higher ground to W. Mill race also feeds Round hills Mills (Oldchapel) to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
