Melaghlin O'More lies beneath a stone knight in full armour, holding a sword and resting one hand on his thigh inside the walled garden at Abbeyleix Demesne. The tomb bears his own command from 1502, asking God for mercy on the man who ordered it made. That much is clear; the life behind the marble remains hidden, perhaps a proud warrior, perhaps a frightened father, perhaps both.

Marked only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Situated in the NE angle of a walled garden in an enclosed area in the grounds of Abbeyleix Demesne. The altar-tomb of Melaghlin O'More contains an effigy of a knight in armour on it's covering slab. He is covered by chain and plate armour, one of his hands is holding a sword and the other is resting on his thigh. It contains the following inscription 'Here lies Melaghlin, son of Owny O'More, who caused this tomb to be made, AD 1502. On whose soul may God have mercy. Amen' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 392; Stalley 1987, 241). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P.
