Oliver Cromwell and Hazelrigg House black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: Hazelrigg House. Hazelrigg House is a fine example of Elizabethan architecture which escaped destruction in the great fire of Northampton (1675). It is also known as Cromwell House, there being a local tradition that Oliver Cromwell slept here on the night before the Battle of Naseby (June 1645). Oliver Cromwell MP was a leading figure in the English Civil War and served as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland; local tradition associates Hazelrigg House with his stay prior to the Battle of Naseby.
