What is recorded here
Old Burying Ground is a children's burial ground in County Mayo, Ireland. It lies hidden in rough pasture, enclosed by a low D-shaped stone wall stretching nearly twenty metres east-west and twenty-seven metres north-south. Vegetation smothers most gravestones, leaving only fragments visible beneath the growth. The place holds the quiet tragedy of young lives lost before records or memory could preserve their names.
In rough pasture. Heavily overgrown area enclosed by low, D-shaped, stone wall (L 19.7m E-W, 27.3m N-S). Few gravestones visible due to vegetation.
The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 666.
