Old Baptist Chapel, Tewkesbury white plaque

This white commemorative plaque records: The Old Baptist Chapel & Burial Ground. The Old Baptist Chapel in Church Street was originally a domestic dwelling built around 1458. From the mid-seventeenth century onwards, members of the persecuted early Baptist movement began to use it for secret and illegal religious meetings. Soon after the Act of Toleration (1689), the building was converted from a home to a recognisable place of worship, and was in regular use up until 1805 when the Baptists moved to a new church in Barton Street. Today the chapel is run as a heritage site by the Abbey Lawn Trust, a registered charity who restored the building in 2015. Access is via Church Street.
