Ogham stone in Shankill

This stone was discovered in 1970 on the townland boundary between Shankill, Co. Kilkenny and Wells, Co. Carlow. It is currently held in storage in the 'Old Library' at Rothe House, Kilkenny (see KK019-131----). It is a remarkably small stone (H c. 0.57m; Wth 0.14m; T 0.055m). It is mounted on a wooden base in such a way as to obscure the final consonant on the first angle of the inscription. The inscription is on three angles reading downwards as follows: left angle MAQI CUNALIG. . . ; right angle MAQI; right rear angle MUCOI COSCIS/N. The size of the stone has led McManus (1991, 75-6) to suggest that 'one might entertain some doubt as to its antiquity.' The precise original location of this ogham stone is unknown.
