Nuala O'Faolain

Nuala O'Faolain was born in County Dublin on 1 March 1940 into a large, struggling family where her father's bohemian indifference created a hunger she spent a lifetime naming. She transformed that private deprivation into public voice through memoirs like Are You Somebody?, which became a worldwide bestseller and reshaped how Irish women told their own stories. She died in Dublin in 2008, four weeks after announcing her terminal cancer on radio, leaving behind work that turned personal wound into shared recognition.
