Noel Brotherston was born in Dundonald, County Down, Ireland on 18 November 1956. He grew up in the town, lived on Bright Street in East Belfast as a small boy, and attended Dundonald High School before becoming a winger for Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers, Bury, Scarborough, and Northern Ireland. His jinking runs and distinctive hairstyle made him a fans' favourite at Blackburn, where he later worked as a painter and decorator after retiring from football.
