Nick Laird was born in 1975 in Cookstown, County Tyrone, the small Northern Irish town where he attended the local comprehensive school before leaving for Cambridge. That modest beginning explains much of his work: two friends from Northern Ireland, one becoming a lawyer and the other drifting as a labourer, measured against the pressure of The Troubles. Laird did not disguise that background; he shaped it into stories about friendship, class and memory.
