Nicholas Aylward Vigors

Old Leighlin, County Carlow, is the birthplace of Nicholas Aylward Vigors, the man who named 110 birds and helped found the Zoological Society of London. He left Oxford before finishing, took a wound at Barossa, then returned to study law and birds until he became MP for Carlow. His name still attaches to snipes and toucans, proving that a wounded young man from a small Irish town can reshape how the world sees other creatures.
