Newcastle Central Station opened in 1850 with John Dobson’s curved iron and glass train shed, turning a routing constraint into one of Britain’s finest railway interiors. Its grand portico faced Neville Street like a civic gateway, while the nearby High Level Bridge helped make the city a major East Coast junction. The building still performs that same job, sheltering passengers beneath spans designed for a faster, wider Victorian world.
