Neville Castle stood at the south-eastern edge of Manor Vale as a spacious hunting lodge for the Neville family, replacing an older moated seat and surrounding a quiet courtyard with stone walls. The building served domestic comfort rather than military defence until around 1616, when its materials were dismantled to construct High Hall nearby. Behind this shift lay a vast deer park stretching through ancient woodland, where fallow deer moved beneath oak canopies and keepers tended the land. The castle disappeared, but the vale preserved the shape of that lost world, holding memory in soil, scrub and silence.
