Muiris Ó Súilleabháin grew up on Great Blasket Island, where harsh seas and unbroken Irish life shaped his memory. He later joined the Garda Síochána in Connemara, yet the island never stopped speaking through him. When he drowned off the Connemara coast in 1950, he returned to water rather than left it behind.
