Moyally Castle

Moyally Castle is a ruined plantation bawn in County Offaly, probably dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. Its rectangular wall, still 3.5 metres high in places, encloses a level area measuring 47 by 33 metres, with a lost oval bastion at the northeast corner and two garderobe chutes, one arching toward a moat that now survives only as a shallow depression on the northwest side. The design resembles the Powder Mills in Ballincollig, where bawn wall towers served as living quarters rather than purely defensive structures. Faint traces of rectangular buildings remain inside, hinting at the domestic rooms where new landowners combined residence and defence during English and Scottish settlement in Ireland.
