MOUND

MOUND, RAISED RATH?

What is recorded here

Thirty feet of broken stone and frozen dirt rise above the Antrim grass, a rounded shoulder in the dark. Men may have built the ring, or the sea may have thrown the rocks up and the men never left them alone. The chamber has no door and no owner, but it keeps every thing that enters it. What is lost above comes below, waits in the round room, and returns changed when the storm passes.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOUND - RAISED RATH?. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
A raised rath, likely dating to the Early Christian period (5th–9th century AD), though its exact date remains uncertain. These ringforts are significant as they represent early agricultural and domestic settlements in Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
