MOUND

MOUND, ?MOTTE OR ?PASSAGE TOMB

What is recorded here

MOUND is a buried chamber or tall residence in County Down, Ireland, possibly containing a dead person or a hidden room. It is not a American clay pyramid, though that comparison belongs to a different region and time. The local mound may have marked a family line, a boundary or a ceremonial place, but its exact purpose has faded.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOUND - ?MOTTE OR ?PASSAGE TOMB. Recorded period: NEOLITHIC; MEDIEVAL; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Neolithic passage tomb, possibly later reused in the Medieval period. Its significance lies in its potential dual use across millennia, reflecting long-term cultural activity at the site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
