What is recorded here
Kilweelran’s four ancient forts stood in a direct N. west line about 160m apart, a spacing that suggests deliberation rather than chance. This is the S. end of that line: a shallow 20.6m mound on a S-facing downslope, its E side taken over by a drystone-walled water tank and two running channels. The channel to the S has cut through the mound’s edge, exposing earth and small stones instead of solid rock. A holy tree lies 30m to the N and a children’s burial ground 130m to the SSW, so the mound sits inside a small cluster of marked places rather than standing alone.
On a gentle S-facing downslope at the S foot of a steep rise in improved pasture. A poorly preserved circular mound (diam. at base 20.6m; max. H 1.4m) with a flat top (8.2m E–W; 1m N–S) and gently sloping sides. A drystone-walled enclosure (L 7m N–S; Wth 6m ext.) is built into the E end. It contains a concrete water tank off which two channels run. The channel to the S reveals the mound composition to include earth and small stones. The OS parish namebooks for Kilweelran in 1839 (Placenames database of Ireland) list four ancient forts in the townland ‘standing in a direct line from east towards N. west about 8 chains [c. 160m] apart’. Enclosures are located c. 150m to the S (CL006-003002-), 90m to the S (CL006-004----) and c. 130m NNE (CL006-007----). A ‘holy tree’ (CL006-006002-) lies c. 30m to the N and a children’s burial ground (CL006-003001-) c. 130m to the SSW.

A Neolithic burial mound, likely dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Age; its size and orientation suggest a communal or high-status interment, though its poor preservation limits detailed interpretation.
