Mound in Imileá An Bhóthair (tc Márthain)

A wedge-shaped mound of earth and stones situated in the low-lying level land S of Smerwick Harbour. Dense vegetation prevents a close examination but the mound measures 14m NW-SE x 11.7m NE-SW, and the edge appears to be slightly raised above the interior. It is .6m in maximum height. Wedge tomb; likely dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2000–500 BCE). Its wedge-shaped form is characteristic of a funerary monument common in western Ireland, often associated with early farming communities.
