Moat Hill in Mount Stewart, County Down, is a medieval motte and moat still standing as a scheduled monument. Earth and water shaped the hill into a defensible form, perhaps for a local lord or a passing army. The digged moat would have gleamed at dawn, making the mound look like a small island raised from the land.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOTTE: MOAT HILL. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
