What is recorded here
Motte and bailey earthworks at Brookhill House demesne in Ballyellough, County Antrim, date to the medieval period and remain scheduled archaeological remains. The mound may have lifted a wooden hall above marshy ground while the surrounding ditch kept rainwater and invaders at a distance. People may have lived there with firelight, fear and routine before the land changed around them.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOTTE & ?BAILEY: BROOKHILL HOUSE DEMESNE. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
