MOTTE AND BAILEY: HARRYVILLE MOTTE in Ballykeel

MOTTE AND BAILEY: HARRYVILLE MOTTE

What is recorded here

Harryville Motte rises in Ballykeel as a medieval earthwork, its shape preserving the sudden violence and temporary safety of twelfth and thirteenth century life. The mound may have supported a wooden tower while the surrounding bailey held kitchens, byres and frightened people during raids. Distance has turned that urgency into silence, but the soil still holds the weight of hands that built it and hearts that watched the road.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOTTE AND BAILEY: HARRYVILLE MOTTE. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; C12TH; C13TH. Recorded protection: State Care. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
