What is recorded here
Quatford castle kept a knife-edge of power ninety metres west of the church, its wooden hall and earthen mound looming over ordinary life. It is no longer a castle in the way men remember, but the land still carries the shape of that command. To walk past is to accept that beauty and tyranny share the same root.
The National Heritage List for England records Motte and bailey castle 90m west of St Mary Magdalene's Church, Quatford as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the late 11th or early 12th century, likely by a Norman lord following the conquest of 1066, the castle at Quatford is important as a rare surviving example of a motte and bailey structure in Shropshire, illustrating early medieval military and administrative practices in the region.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
