Morgan Crofton, born in Dublin in 1826, reshaped geometric probability through Crofton's formula and a Britannica article on chance. He left Queen's College Galway after converting to Roman Catholicism in the 1850s, then taught at Catholic colleges before becoming Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1868, he died in Brighton in 1915.
