Montacute Castle stands as a Norman motte and bailey on St Michael's Hill, its substantial mound and stone keep built soon after the Conquest of 1066. The elevated position commanded the surrounding landscape and the settlement below, turning the hill into a watchful eye over Somerset. Though ruinous now, the surviving earthworks and stonework still reveal the defensive engineering of early medieval fortifications in the West Country.
