Mitford Castle is a ruined motte and bailey above the River Wansbeck, built for the Bertram family after the Norman Conquest and still standing as a scarped earth mound in Mitford. It changed hands through seizure, rebellion and imprisonment before burning into ruin, while the Mitford family moved their seat elsewhere. The mound remains a blunt reminder that power in Northumberland was taken, lost and rebuilt often enough to wear the landscape itself.
