What is recorded here
Freestanding triangular-profile cast-iron milestone, erected c.1890. Having chamfered upper surface, hollow to rear (south). Relief lettering and numbering reading "SKIBB 9, CORK 44, SKIBB 9, ROSSCARB' 4" and maker's marks to front (north) faces.
This milestone is a notable feature of the roadside. Its triangular form and simple well-executed detailing make it instantly recognisable and legible to passers-by. It is a fine example of the well-designed, utilitarian objects which iron casting produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Milestones of this type are becoming increasingly rare with only a small number avoiding damage or removal.
