Chapel House still holds Milecastle 9 beneath its fields, a long-axis Roman gate built with thick sandstone walls and occupied from the second through fourth centuries. E. Birley excavated most of it in 1929 after earlier uncertainty, revealing an interior building, paved corner and nearby ditch. The site may have rested on a prepared platform or older occupation, while soldiers perhaps stood at its north gate until the Wall fell quiet.
