Midden

What is recorded here

One of seven middens (SL019-057001-, SL019-057002-, SL019-057003-, SL019-057004-, SL019-057005-, SL019-057006-, SL019-057007-) identified along a 1.3km length of shoreline on the W side of Ballisodare Bay, four in Tanrego West townland and three in Tanrego East or Carrowmore townland. Located at a small, grass-covered rise on the shore edge. On inspection in 1994 it was found to consist of a dense layer of oyster shells in a matrix of dark brown soil (L c. 10m; D 0.5m). The deposits are directly beneath the sod and overlie sandy soil. A C14 determination from a sample taken in 2000 from this midden returned a calibrated of 3,660 - 3,440 BC (Woodman and Milner 2013, 39).
