Midden

What is recorded here

In the estuary of the River Moy, located in the middle of the W side of Horse Island, a small islet adjacent to the SW end of Bartragh Island. The midden is exposed in section in the scarp face that defines the W side of the island. It appears as a layer (L c. 4m NNW-SSE; D c. 0.15-0.2m) of cockle and limpet shells, with occasional periwinkles, mussels and oysters. It underlies a layer of sod and dark brown topsoil and overlies a light brown stony subsoil. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 September 2012
