Midden in Cromane Lower

Cromane Spit is an elongated promontory which extends N into Dingle Bay. Seven shell middens are exposed along a 3.8km stretch on its W side between Island Point and Black Point, five of which occur in the townland of Dooaghs (KE055-004----, KE055-005----, KE055-006----, KE055-007----, KE055-008----). This midden is located close to Island Point and is composed of a compact deposit of mussel, periwinkle, cockle and limpet shells. It occurs .4m below the top of the .9m high shore-face and measures 4.15m long and up to .17m deep. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
