Midden in Cill Mhuirbhigh

This midden was revealed during the course of research excavations in the middle enclosure of Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----); it lay to the S of a house (GA110-039028-) and consisted of extensive dumps of limpet shells. Finds recovered from it included pottery, pumice, bone points and a bone pin, as well as a small number of coarse stone tools, a bronze ring and a heavily corroded broken bronze implement. A sample of animal bone from four contiguous flat stones that projected out from under the foundation course of the inner enclosure wall to the S, and which marked the end of the occupation sequence of the midden, and the house to its N, produced a radiocarbon date range of 900-510 cal.
