Midden in Bartragh Island

In the estuary of the River Moy, located in the middle of the W side of a narrow peninsula of land extending S from the SW shore of Bartragh Island. The midden is exposed in section at the top of an almost vertical scarp which defines the W face of the peninsula. It directly underlies a layer (D 0.10-0.15m) of topsoil and sod. The midden layer (L 5m NNW-SSE; D 0.3m) is composed predominately of densely packed oyster shells but also includes cockle shells and occasional periwinkles.
