What is recorded here

Snail shells and broken pots accumulated along the Barrow shore long before written history, creating one of seven middens recognised in County Kerry. People discarded the remains of meals and tools into the same place, layering domestic life into the earth until the refuse itself became a record. The pile grew because humans kept returning, eating, breaking and living beside the water.

One of seven middens entered onto the Register of Historic Monuments on 28 February 1992. The precise location of this midden could not be determined from the map showing the boundary of the registration order and therefore it has been assigned a temporary location at the centre of that area.
