Mick Smyth was born in Dublin on 13 May 1940 and became one of Ireland's most dependable goalkeepers. He spent nearly two decades guarding nets for Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Athlone Town, winning league titles and cups while playing hundreds of competitive matches. His steady hands and unbroken runs of appearances made him a familiar figure in Irish football through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.
