Mícheál Ó Móráin was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, on 24 December 1911 into a strong Republican family whose members had fought in the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. He served as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála from 1938 to 1973 and held several cabinet portfolios before dying in his birthplace on 6 May 1983.
