Michael William Balfe was born in County Dublin, Ireland, on 15 May 1808. He grew up on Pitt Street, which became Balfe Street in 1917, and his musical gifts emerged before he left boyhood. He composed a polacca at seven, played violin for his father's dancing classes, and carried that early fire into operas that still sound like breath given shape.
