Michael John O'Leary was born in Macroom, County Cork, Ireland on 29 September 1890, the son of Daniel and Margaret O'Leary, who owned a farm at Inchigeelagh near the town. His father was a fervent Irish nationalist and keen sportsman who participated in competitive weightlifting and football. Young Michael grew up in this vibrant household before joining the Royal Navy at sixteen, eventually rising to become a Victoria Cross recipient for destroying German barricades near Cuinchy during World War I.
