Mew Island is an active lighthouse within the Copeland Islands of County Down in Northern Ireland, where strong tidal currents have tested ships for centuries. The current 19th-century tower replaced earlier lights, including a 1711 coal-burning cottage and an 1815 tower designed by George Halpin, to guide shipping into Belfast Lough. In 2015, workers swapped the heavy hyperradiant Fresnel lens for a solar-powered LED system, moving the old glass optic to Belfast where it still draws visitors.
