One corner is missing, but the broken edge still points toward George Dowde, who died in 1636 and was remembered beneath St Audeon's nave. The worn IHS, skull, cross-bones and cup turn a private death into a warning for everyone who passes: love, lose, remember.

In the nave of St Audeon's medieval parish church (DU018-020075-) is a memorial stone commemorating George Dowde (d. 1636). It is a coffin-shaped limestone slab with one broken corner. The centre of the slab has a very worn IHS, a skull and cross-bones and a cup with 'ECCE HOMO'. It has chamfered edges with an incised marginal inscription in Roman lettering (L 1.79m, Wth 0.74m-0.52m). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 16 August 2012
